Ivanka Trump’s use of a Chinese proverb to show support for her father’s historic summit with North Korea’s supreme leader has left China’s internet users bewildered.
Because this Chinese proverb doesn’t seem to exist.
On Monday, Ivanka tweeted what she called a Chinese proverb: “Those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those doing it.”
The tweet, apparently addressed to critics of Donald Trump’s meeting with Kim Jong-un on Tuesday, was also pinned to Ivanka’s Twitter profile.
While Twitter is blocked in mainland China, screenshots of the tweet soon went viral on Chinese social media site Weibo, as users debated the origin of this quote.
