What could possibly go wrong with this Fujitsu tech?

A Japanese supermarket has started analyzing customers’ in-store behavior and feeding it to a generative AI to drive an avatar that makes real-time suggestions about stuff you might want to buy.

The Aruk Mitajiri supermarket, in the city of Hofu, started a trial of this arrangement yesterday, wielding tech from Fujitsu that uses video cameras to detect shoppers who linger at displays, compare multiple products, bend down towards a shop display, pick up a product, or respond to in-store content.

Observations of such behaviors are used to tune prompts for a generative AI manifested as a customized “Avatar concierge” that pumps out custom sales patter and/or content.

Fujitsu expects this process will result in customers returning to the shelves, confident of what they want to purchase and happy to splash the necessary wad of Yen.

The Japanese tech giant cooked this up in conjunction with a research group led by Naoto Onzo, director of the Institute of Marketing and Communication at Japan’s Waseda University …

Cloud service goes down in its biggest region

Amazon Web Services is experiencing an outage at its US-East-1 cloud region.

The company said that AWS CloudFormation, Lambda, and Amazon Connect were impacted by the problem.

Update 2:49 PM PDT: AWS said that it was “working to accelerate the rate at which Lambda asynchronous invocations are processed, and now estimate that the queue will be fully processed over the next hour. We expect that all queued invocations will be executed.”

Federal Trade Commission secures delay of $69bn deal which it argues would be anti-competitive

A US district judge has granted the Federal Trade Commission’s request to temporarily block Microsoft’s $69bn buyout of video game maker Activision Blizzard and set a hearing next week.

Microsoft’s bid to acquire the Call of Duty video game maker has been approved by the EU but blocked by British competition authorities, while the FTC, a US authority, has argued the transaction would give Microsoft’s video game console Xbox exclusive access to Activision games, leaving Nintendo consoles and Sony’s PlayStation out in the cold.

When a London man discovered the front left-side bumper of his Toyota RAV4 torn off and the headlight partially dismantled not once but twice in three months last year, he suspected the acts were senseless vandalism. When the vehicle went missing a few days after the second incident, and a neighbor found their Toyota Land Cruiser gone shortly afterward, he discovered they were part of a new and sophisticated technique for performing keyless thefts.

It just so happened that the owner, Ian Tabor, is a cybersecurity researcher specializing in automobiles. While investigating how his RAV4 was taken, he stumbled on a new technique called CAN injection attacks.

GitHub has updated its SSH keys after accidentally publishing the private part to the world. Whoops.

A post on GitHub’s security blog reveals that the biz has changed its RSA SSH host keys. This is going to cause connection errors, and some frightening warning messages, for a lot of developers, but it’s all right: it’s not scary hackk0r activity, just plain old human error.

The White House has issued a new cybersecurity strategy that addresses, among other things, the role of large tech companies in preventing cyberattacks. The strategy document calls to “rebalance the responsibility to defend cyberspace,” shifting responsibility for things like ransomware attacks off of individuals, small businesses, and local governments. It also singles out China as “the broadest, most active, and most persistent threat to both government and private sector networks.”

The proof of concept code from [DvorakDwarf] works by encoding binary files into video files which can then be uploaded to the video sharing service.
