New reports from Nielsen and Leichtman Research both highlight how quickly traditional TV is losing the fight to streaming, TikTok, and YouTube.

It finally happened, at least according to a new metric Nielsen began using two years ago: linear TV now accounts for less than 50 percent of all TV usage. This probably isn’t a surprise unless you’re reading this on the couch while watching the NBC Nightly News. Between YouTube, TikTok, and streaming channels, people have a lot of ways to occupy their video-viewing time.

Approximately two years ago, Nielsen started using a new metric for measuring how people spend their TV-watching time. It built in buckets for broadcast TV, cable TV, streaming, and a catchall called “Other” that accounted for people using gaming consoles and media players. The latest report shows broadcast and cable TV each dropping about one percent from June 2023 to July 2023. Streaming and the “Other” category each gained that one percent in the same time period.

We’re failing at preventing foodborne outbreaks—and solving them.

We will never know for certain what caused a large, multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to Wendy’s restaurants late last year, according to a new study led by investigators at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study, highlighting weaknesses in our ability to respond to foodborne outbreaks, lands amid a separate report published by the CDC finding that, in general, we’re also failing to prevent outbreaks. In fact, cases from some common foodborne pathogens have increased relative to pre-pandemic levels.

JR East announced on Saturday that the system failure earlier the day that had prevented Mobile Suica app users from charging electric train fare money to their smartphones and the use of credit cards at JR East ticket offices had been restored around 1pm.

East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) said a system failure meant commuters were unable to pay for journeys with the Mobile Suica app or digital wallets and people planning trips were unable to reserve tickets online on Saturday.

The outage also affected credit card transactions at JR ticket offices and machines.

Facial recognition has been one of the hallmark features of Google Photos since the app’s release, but it’s recently gotten a lot more powerful. I’ve just noticed a silent improvement that has made Photos capable of recognizing the back of people’s heads as a person and tagging them correctly with the right name. This is happening regardless of whether I uploaded these pics to Google Photos a week ago or a couple of years ago.

Honda has unveiled the EM1 e: e-scooter in Europe. Announced last September, the new model will be the first two-wheeled EV from the brand to launch on the continent. The EM1, or Electric Moped 1, has a three-phase brushless in-wheel motor with 0.58 kW typical and 1.7 kW peak power. The engine has a top speed of 45 kph (~28 mph) and delivers up to 90 Nm of torque.

The EM1 e: uses the removable 50V Honda Mobile Power Pack e: providing up to 41.3 km (~25.7 miles) typical range or 48 km (~30 miles) range in ECON mode. The battery can be recharged up to 2,500 times, with a 2.7-hour charge taking the battery from 25 to 75%; a full recharge takes around six hours. LED lights indicate the battery charge level, and the scooter consumes 47 Wh/km (~76 Wh/mile). A digital dash shows information such as the remaining battery, and you can recharge your phone via a USB-A port.

X.Org members have approved of the X.Org Foundation letting the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) become its fiscal sponsor.

Since 2016 the X.Org Foundation became part of Software in the Public Interest to let SPI handle all of the organization’s fiscal duties and management. But due to slow turnaround time in handling of some requests from the X.Org Board of Directors and other challenges in dealing with that volunteer-run organization, since last year the X.Org Foundation had been considering other organizations to join.

The conference for disease detectives hadn’t been held in person for several years because of the pandemic

The staff dedicated to investigating disease outbreaks for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received a reminder this week of the pandemic’s persistence: confirmed covid cases at their own conference.

“We’re letting you know that several people who attended the [Epidemic Intelligence Service] Conference have tested positive for COVID-19,” a CDC branch chief wrote in an email to staff on Friday and obtained by The Washington Post, adding that at least one person at the division’s recruiting event on Wednesday had tested positive.

Much has been written about the success of global mega-brand Coca-Cola. Since 1886 its been leaving an indelible impression on soda-lovers, yet rumor has it that when it comes to the taste, Coca-Cola doesn’t leave an impression at all. The curious assertion was shared by Warren Buffet, who, if you’ve been living under a rock, has been one of the top five wealthiest humans since forever.
